Decorative Leaf in Artistic Blacksmithing: Evolution of Form and the Role of the Plant Motif in Shaping Historical Style
Abstract
This article examines the decorative leaf in artistic blacksmithing as an element through which a natural form is transformed into an ornamental and stylistically significant component of a metalwork object. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to distinguish more precisely between the natural prototype, artistic stylization, plastic adaptation to metal, and historical-stylistic interpretation of the plant motif. The aim of the study is to identify the patterns of transformation of the decorative leaf and determine its role in shaping the historical style of artistically worked metal. The study employs methods of art historical analysis, morphological analysis of form, comparative analysis of historical examples, and systematization of plastic and technological characteristics. The results demonstrate that the decorative leaf should be considered not only an element of vegetal ornament but also a carrier of stylistic information. Its diagnostic value is determined by a combination of morphological, plastic, compositional, technological, and historical-contextual characteristics. The study shows that the specific properties of metal and forging technology directly participate in shaping the plastic image of the plant motif. The proposed approach makes it possible to consider the decorative leaf as a link between the natural prototype, artistic stylization, the plasticity of metal, manufacturing technology, and historical stylistics. The findings can be applied to the art historical analysis of historical metalwork, the reconstruction of decorative elements, and the design of contemporary artistic blacksmithing works oriented toward historical stylistic systems.
